Killzone 2's new story is generic enough to be dismissed as garbage. Even a veteran FPS fan can't be expected to see much more of the story, nor play it all that well. Killzone 2 has a vast, muddy, bland open-world best-of-three-really, and the novelty wears thin quickly. It would be an incredible feat for a modern-day blockbuster shooter to retain its overblown excitement over ten hours, and Killzone 2's frappuccino bursts of adrenaline only last up to about five. Playing it will be fun once, but if you're willing to take it for more than four hours, there's really not much juice left in it.
We'd feel more comfortable if we had at least one game that did the following, and most of them do. First, a game with a skill tree or leveling system. Killzone 2's moment-to-moment action is scripted and linear; PlayStation 3 gamers will tell you that the cement walls of a gunfight give them the airy feel of a Soviet war film. We long for the elasticity and ability to experiment of, say, a game like Uncharted, where the player is encouraged (or conditioned) to explore the environment, learn new moves, or seek out alternate courses of action.
This is, perhaps, the most difficult aspect to control; but it is also the most importnat aspect of City Life. WW2 is actually a really important theme in our society, and as a white male it is easy to chuckle at the "not-so-minority" reasons for wanting to wage war. The state owns the monopolies of public broadcast and education, and minorities are all enslaved. Furthermore, while not getting personal judgments on the good or bad morality of such subjects, "I" am not in any real position to demand that someone else pay "my" taxes. On the other hand, I'd rather not opt out of taxes altogether and have the government determine how my money should be spent. This is the dilemma. I'm not saying that I believe we should not have conscription or involvement in wartime, but rather that this debate should take place a bit more openly. d2c66b5586
