Black Youth Digital Lab: Podcasting

 

Ages 12-16

Saturdays 10:30-1 pm | March 28, April 11, 18, 25 and May 2

M3M Studios - 9923 100 Ave, Grande Prairie, Alberta

Designed to introduce youth to the fundamentals of podcast production. Youth will be taken through the experience of developing podcast ideas, working through every stage of production, and marketing their podcast online.

 

By the end of the 6-week program, participants will have had the opportunity to work across all production levels to walk away with podcasting and marketing skills. 

​

The 6-week program is taught by Entrepreneur, Producer, and Creating North of 55 Podcast Host, Mariah Braun, at her Grande Prairie Content Studio, M3M Studios

Week 3 | April 11 - Production + Equipment

Week 4 | April 18 - Marketing

Week 5 | April 25 - Podcast Production 

Week 6 | May 2 - Podcast Post-Production

 

March 28 | Session 1: Development

Youth will learn how to develop a concept, Logline, Synopsis, and theme, along with aspects of each episode like structuring episodes, generating topics, writing scripts, and planning out content. Youth will then take their concept and develop it at home, bringing it to Session 2.

March 29 - April 10 - NO IN-PERSON SESSION

There will be no in-person session this week due to the Easter long weekend.

Youth will spend this time at home developing their concept to share with the class on April 11. 

 

April 11 | Session 2: Podcasting Equipment

This session will guide youth on what equipment to use to capture a video or audio-only podcast. Youth will learn to use an audio interface, mics, XLR cables, headphones, and SD cards to capture podcast media, then assemble it in post-production. 

 

April 18 | Session 3: Marketing

Youth can define a plan to reach their podcast’s target audience through traditional and digital marketing strategies. The session will teach youth how to define and reach their target audience, Build Brand Awareness, and best use their available resources. 

 

April 25 | Session 4: Podcast Production

In week five, youth will film a 30-min video podcast; each participant will be assigned a production role(s), on- and off-camera, based on interest. Youth will learn how to store their media and prepare it for editing in the next phase.

 

May 2 | Session 5: Podcast Post-Production

Participants will observe a guided editing instruction in Adobe Premiere, then practice editing a portion of the 30 min podcast in Adobe Premiere, and receive tips and tricks for editing future podcasts and marketing collateral.
