About Black History Month
For the past few years, the Grande Prairie Intercultural Association (GPIA), along with many community partners, has come together to plan intercultural celebrations in honour of Black History Month (BHM) in the Grande Prairie region.
The GPIA aims to foster diversity, multiculturalism, integration, and mutual respect among cultures, and to provide support, mentoring, and networking opportunities.
We at the GPIA acknowledge that Black history is not just an event remembered in February or only for Black people; the purpose of BHM events is to welcome and invite the entire local community to recognize, learn, and experience Black culture.
Each year, the GPIA recruits a diverse group of volunteers for the BHM planning committee. We understand that it is through the dedication of the BHM planning committee, volunteers and sponsors supporting us that GPIA and the BHM planning committee can recognize Black history as an integral part of Canadian history and ensure that everyone, regardless of their background, can appreciate and learn from the diverse contributions that Black Canadians have made to the fabric of the country.
