Black History Month
Creativity Kit
Created in collaboration with Cameroonian artist Aurel Tchoumo Tsafack, the African Mask Mash-Up Creativity Kit invites you to explore the power of masks as living cultural expressions and objects that carry identity, history and shared values across generations.
Designed for Black History Month, this hands-on kit blends learning and making: you’ll read Aurel’s Mask Guide to discover the meaning behind symbols and motifs drawn from Gabonese and Ghanaian traditions, then use the provided shapes and materials to build your own contemporary mask collage.
Aurel’s practice is rooted in reconnecting with culture and heritage through art reflecting his lived experience as a newcomer in Canada and his ongoing journey to reclaim lost cultural identity by learning from traditions and bringing them into contemporary dialogue.
The activity kit will be available at all Black History Month events; a limited number of kits will be available.
The Art Gallery of Grande Prairie and the 2026 Black History Month Planning Committee acknowledge the support of the Province of Alberta through the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, ATB, the City of Grande Prairie, County of Grande Prairie No.1, the M.D. of Greenview, M3M Marketing, Town & Country News, as well as Enframe Construction LTD that contributed to the production of the 2026 Black History Month Creativity Kit.
